Gosford Mental Health Unit

Created by world-class architecture and interior design firm dwp | suters, the development of a 30-bed acute mental health unit at Gosford Hospital was a complex balance of safety and security.

The task set for dwp | suters was to create a pleasant and non-threatening environment. To enhance the environmental quality of the unit, it was important to develop a design, which utilised double-height common spaces, together with mixed mode ventilation, to avoid any overtly 'hemmed-in' feeling.
This project also employed sustainable initiatives, such as a solar hot water system and rainwater harvesting for toilet flushing, in addition to various other passive design principles, including optimal orientation and sunshading.
