Chatrium Hotel, Bangkok, Thailand
International architecture and interior design firm dwp were commissioned to create the new interiors for the Chatrium Sathorn Hotel, in Bangkok's CDB, with a limited budget. The areas included in the redesign were the restaurant, pre-function breakout area and the main function room, as well as a further meeting room. All areas are interconnected, served by a central kitchen, so good circulation between spaces was imperative.

For design inspiration, dwp drew upon two main themes, namely elements of Asian art and the ambience of western colonial style, to create a harmonic balance. Textures and colours were based on the Oriental colour interpretation of a flower, since the hotel logo is that of a lotus flower. The vibrancy of colours meets on a more neutral grey colour base, heightening the effect.

The restaurant is for fine, yet casual, dining, which meant that all though exacting standards of food, service and décor are imperative, the feel had to allow for an informal and accessible setting. These interiors evoke a sense of Asia, through traditional paintings and references, but connected to and combining an underlying thread through the entire design, which infuses east and west. The central feature here is patterned silk, all along the axis and on full-height pivoting partitions, while mural patterns echo inspiration from Sathorn Canal and a raintree atmosphere.
